“The country is watching us. The world is waiting on us. The future depends on us and we will seize this moment,”
-Governor Gavin Newsom
January 7, 2019
Today, Gavin Newsom was sworn in as the 40th Governor of California today. He is known for his progressive leadership style and is expected to take a more aggressive and confrontational approach towards Washington D.C. “Gavin’s win is a signal that there will be a different chapter, and a different relationship between California and the Trump administration… It will be more aggressive and in your face,” says Sean Clegg, Democratic strategist of SCRB Strategies.
Newsom served two terms as the Mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, followed by his election to Lieutenant Governor of California under Gov. Jerry Brown. He also served two terms as Lieutenant Governor. The Bay Area native gained national attention during his mayoral position when he allowed the city of San Francisco to issue same-sex marriage licenses in 2004.
With his wife and kids in tow, Newsom took the stage and was sworn in to office, with the audience cheering him on. “Gavin, Gavin, Gavin!” the crowd chimed in, as he was in the middle of his oath. During his inaugural address, the 51-year-old fired up the crowd stating, “At a time when so much of America is divided, we are united. Our people are big-hearted and fair-minded, when those qualities are more vital than ever,” He also took subtle hits at Trump’s presidency by saying, “We will offer an alternative to the corruption and incompetence in the White House,”
