Nikki Medoro talked to Andrew Marantz of the New Yorker about the inner workings of the alt-right and their trolls and propagandists.
Originally, I was just trying to see what the internet is doing to our brains, our society, and our politics. There’s only so far you can get with that with abstractions, arguments, and opinions. I wanted to see that if we had a functioning speech information ecosystem, then the good voices, the reasonable voices would always reliably rise to the top. That is obviously not happening, if you’ve ever been on the internet. So I said, Okay, who’s doing this stuff? I went to the people who were breaking the fabric of our democracy actively, by being propagandists and trolls and I went to the people who were in charge of these free speech networks.
