It’s definitely disrupted the recycling and waste industry with what you’re describing as the “Amazon Effect”, which is a sort of “browning” of the waste stream with all this cardboard from our online purchases.
Many of the Asian countries where we used to dump, China among them, shut down. China took in nearly half of all the world’s recyclables and it has garnered a lot of attention when it comes to plastic waste…They’re also not accepting as much cardboard now and so that leaves us with nowhere really to put it. We don’t have the domestic paper mills yet to absorb all of the excess packaging materials that are ending up curbside, so that’s definitely an issue right now.
