BART to “Phase out Paper Tickets” at Select Stations; Transitioning to Clipper Cards Only

This morning, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) announced a pilot program in which certain stations will transition from dispensing paper tickets to “Clipper-only”. Clipper Cards are the blue reloadable, “contactless smart cards” that you scan to exit the fare gate rather than insert the one-time use paper tickets. Clipper Cards are administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, which allows riders to pay for their fare at numerous transportation agencies around the Bay, including Muni, Caltrain and SF Bay Ferry.

This summer, Downtown Berkeley, 19th Street, Emarcadero and Powell Street stations will participate in the pilot program, which aims to be implemented systemwide by 2020. (See dates for each station below) According to BART’s announcement, these changes come in an attempt to save riders’ money, provide a long-lasting ticket, avoid fare gate jams and reduce paper waste.
