Assemblymember Phil Ting discusses his new bill. Essentially, current law allows only law enforcement and immediate family to file a petition with the court (a Gun Violence Restraining Order), asking a judge to take away someone’s firearms temporarily for 21 days because they present a danger to themselves or others. The order could be extended for up to a year. Ting’s AB 61 would allow educators, employers and co-workers to also file. These are people we see every day (work, school), so they may know us better and can see changes/risks.
