Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf joins The Morning Show with Nikki Medoro to provide updates on her efforts helping those most in need during the COVID-19 pandemic and attempts to reopen schools.
Last Friday, in Alameda, Newsom announced California will set aside 10% of all vaccine doses for teachers and child care workers, prompting some local debate. Medoro tweeted her support of vaccinating teachers.

When explaining Oakland’s effort to vaccinate residents Mayor Schaaf said,
“We are so lucky that the federal government gave Oakland and Los Angeles the very first federally supplied site. So we’ve got mass vaccinate site going on at the Coliseum. But, we took one of our three mobile units that came along with that site and we put it at the Alameda County Department of Education just for our teachers and our education workers. That dedicated site is really helping us fast track these beloved educators because we need to get our kids back in school and this is a great way to accelerate that. I’m really confident that people are going to see more and more access to vaccinations.”
Schaaf continued to explain the mobile units are being used to help get vaccines to the most impacted communities areas including Fruitvale and Oakland, noting the federal supply being used in the mobile sites doesn’t impact California’s supply.
Tuesday, Schaaf announced new safety measures on a high injury street after Deontae Bush was killed at the intersection two years ago. Bush’s family worked with Oakland to create “Oakland speed cushions” and other safety measures. Wednesday morning, Oakland renamed the street after him.
In case you have trouble keeping up with all the things Mayor Schaaf does, she is launching a new newsletter format, The Mayor’s Weekly Briefing. The roundup includes the latest news you may have missed about issues impacting Oakland and the work the city is doing to address those challenges.
