San Francisco, CA – March 12, 2021 – Bay to Breakers announced today that the iconic yearly event, scheduled for August 22nd will once again be produced as a virtual race for 2021, offering participants the option to complete their run between May 16th and June 2nd, 2021.
Last October, Bay to Breakers event organizers along with the City and County of San Francisco decided to move the traditional May event to August in hopes of producing an in-person event. After assessing the continued impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, it has been determined that due to the size and nature of the event, the race will be operated virtually.
“Initially, securing the August date gave us hope that we would be able to host the in-person event,” said John Kane, Capstone Event Group CEO. “Although we are now moving to a virtual race once more, we look forward to keeping the Bay to Breakers tradition alive with our participants.”
Since the virtual race is going virtual, why wait until August? Bay to Breakers race will be moving back to the traditional 3rd Sunday of May and will now conclude on Global Running Day. All currently registered and new participants looking for a wild experience can complete their virtual run from May 16 – June 2, 2021.
Participants will receive their medal and bib as well as bonus swag. Plus, a portion of all registrations will be donated to the California Wildfire Relief Fund, helping those affected by last summer’s wildfires.
Registrants that do not want to participate in this year’s virtual run can defer their registration into Bay to Breakers 2022. Deferral fees have been waived.
