Fall is in the air and pumpkins are ready to be carved, or in Half Moon Bay’s case, weighed.

The Annual Safeway World Champion Weigh-off in Half Moon Bay officially announced a winner for 2021.

Jeff Uhlmeyer took the first place with his 2,191-pound mega goliath, taking home the top prize of $19,719. Uhlmeyer, a retired engineer, drove the gigantic gourd on a flatbed trailer all the way from Olympia, Washington.

If a pumpkin breaks the world record of 2,350 pounds the owner will be awarded $30,000.

“I don’t think there’s any secret about pumpkin growing,” Uhlmeyer said. “You need good seeds, good soil, good friends and good collaboration.”
