California officially fell back.

On Sunday, November 7, almost all Americans turned their clocks back and gained one extra hour of sleep.

Like clockwork, every time Daylight Saving Time rolls around, so does the inevitable debate about whether to abolish the bill or not.

Currently, Hawaii and Arizona, observe standard time throughout the year. The two states made the decision shortly after Congress passed bills for daylight saving time in the 1960s.

Many senators are working to follow in Hawaii and Arizona’s footsteps with The Sunshine Protection Act. The act would establish a permanent daylight saving time in the United States, leading to later sunrises and sunsets during the four months in which a majority of the U.S. currently observes standard time.

While speaking on the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act, Senator Patty Murray said,

“I don’t know a single person who loves to go through the trouble of figuring out whether their microwave or oven has the hour right or anyone who looks forward to the sun setting. But beyond convenience this really is a matter of health and safety. Studies have shown that our switch to standard time can increase rates of seasonal depression as well as heart problems and the risk of strokes.”

The Morning Show with Nikki Medoro weighs pros and cons of ending Daylight Saving Time once and for all. Let Nikki know if you want to keep DST or move to the Sunshine Protection Act on KGO’s Facebook page.
