California employers are once again required to provide employees with supplemental paid sick leave to recover from COVID-19 or care for a family member with the virus.
Amid the national surge in COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant, Newsom and state lawmakers announced they have reached an agreement to workers have two weeks of supplemental paid sick leave through September 30, 2022.
“Throughout this pandemic, we have come together to address the immediate impacts COVID-19 continues to have on millions of California families, both at home and at work.” Governor Gavin Newsom’s statement continued, “By extending sick leave to frontline workers with COVID and providing support for California businesses, we can help protect the health of our workforce, while also ensuring that businesses and our economy are able to thrive.”
The legislation, which lawmakers will likely fast-track to the governor in the coming weeks, would apply to all businesses with 26 or more employees.
In 2021, a similar law from provided 80 hours of supplemental paid sick leave expired September 30.
