Kern County Urges Anti-Vax L.A. Deputies to ‘Take Back Your Freedom’

Traffic and pedestrian stops by California law enforcement agencies dropped significantly in 2020 compared to the year before, but Black or transgender people were still more likely to be searched then white or cisgender people, according to a state report released Friday, Dec. 31, 2021. Kern County officials posted a recruitment video on Twitter urging Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who are opposed to vaccine mandates to apply for positions in Kern County.

“Take back your freedom and apply today to work at the Kern County Sheriff’s Office,” the one-minute video continues, “You deserve a job that welcomes you, and your values, with open arms.”

The video was posted one day after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors moved to remove Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s COVID-19 vaccination enforcement responsibilities.

Villanueva has repeatedly said he will not fire deputies who refuse to get vaccinated, claiming, “The issue has become so politicized there are entire groups of employees that are willing to be fired and laid off rather than get vaccinated.”

Listen to John Rothmann detail the issue below.
