Most California Transplants Are Coming From This State

FILE – In this Monday, May 12, 2008 file photo, the “Painted Ladies,” a row of historical Victorian homes, underscore the San Francisco skyline in a view from Alamo Square. Real estate brokerage Redfin analyzed home sales over the past 24 months in 20 major U.S. cities, breaking down the data by neighborhood. Many of the cities reflect home values that have outpaced wages over the past 15 years, causing their neighborhoods to mirror a broader national wealth gap. San Francisco, for example, enjoys the benefits of tech fortunes, but its homes are largely unaffordable for the police officers, firefighters and teachers the city needs. Although California has seen some well-publicized drops in population in recent years, it continues to be a desired relocation destination for people in a number of states. Some more than others, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Leading the pack of California people suppliers is New York, which lost 37,567 residents to California in 2019, the Census Bureau reports. Texas is a close second, with 37,063 residents moving to the West Coast that same year, per bureau statistics.

The rest of the top five is made up of states a little closer to California. Coming in at number three is Washington, which saw 31,882 people move to Cali, while 28,226 Arizonans moved there that same year. And rounding out the top five is Nevada, where 26,433 residents packed up and moved to California in 2019, the Census Bureau reports.
