Missing Hiker Found Dead In California

The four-day search for a missing California hiker has come to a tragic end.

Searchers have found the body of 29-year-old Tim Sgrignoli near Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County, according to sheriff’s rep Raquel Zick.

Although his exact cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, investigators believe California’s extreme heat was “likely a contributing factor,” Zick says.

Sgrignoli and his girlfriend were hiking in the Gaviota Peak area earlier this week when the girlfriend began to suffer from heat exhaustion, authorities say. The 2,400-foot summit in the Santa Ynez Mountains reached 114 degrees on Sunday afternoon.

Sgrignoli left her near a shaded cave and set out to find water for her, according to Santa Barbara Fire officials.

After his girlfriend was rescued and informed authorities, the search for the Sgrignoli began on Sunday.

The Santa Barbara Police Department confirm no foul play was suspected in Sgrignoli’s death.
