Death Toll Rises As Iran Protests Spread

Kurdish women activists hold headscarfs and a portrait of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, with Arabic that reads, “The woman is life, don’t kill the life,” during a protest against her death in Iran, at Martyrs’ Square in downtown Beirut, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022. Protests have erupted across Iran in recent days after Amini, a 22-year-old woman, died while being held by the morality police for violating the country’s strictly enforced Islamic dress code. At least 9 people have been killed as protests over the death of a 22-year-old woman continue in Iran.

While that tally comes from The Associated Press, a report from Iran’s state television has stated that the death toll could be closer to 17.

Outages on social media and the internet to the outside of the country continued on Thursday, hampering protestors’ ability to share information on the unrest.

Protests began after the death of Mahsa Amini who was allegedly arrested by morality police over Iran’s strict dress code.
